7 points to check before buying a used Van de Wiele velvet loom
Gearbox clearances, shaft output, missing parts, dobby, shed setting, backrest and take-up, and whether it is a 32 or 22 series. What to check before you buy a second-hand Van de Wiele.

In velvet and carpet production, Van de Wiele sets the quality standard. New machines are a large investment, so many mills buy second-hand Van de Wiele velvet looms instead. If you are planning to do the same, check these seven points before you decide.
1. Gearbox clearances
The gearbox is the heart of the machine. Excessive clearance lowers fabric quality, and a machine bought without checking it can need expensive repairs soon after it arrives.
2. Shaft output
The shaft output sets the rhythm of the loom. Wear or looseness here shows up as weaving faults, so it should always be inspected.
3. Missing parts
Even a small missing part can mean downtime and extra cost once production starts. Make sure the machine is complete.
4. Dobby condition
If the dobby isn’t working properly, you won’t get the patterns you need. Check that it runs.
5. Shed setting: pile height and the jacquard
The shed opening is the distance between the upper and lower warps, and in velvet weaving it directly sets the pile height. A wrong shed setting causes pile breaks, uneven surfaces, stripes or tears in the fabric.
6. Backrest and take-up
The backrest and take-up system have to be in solid condition for continuous production. A fault here can interrupt weaving badly.
7. Which series: 32 or 22?
Van de Wiele built several families over the years, such as VMM, MPS, VTR and VSI, in jacquard and plain versions. Know exactly which one you are buying. The 32 and 22 series differ in capacity and technology, and that difference shows up in your output.
